OUR PROGRAM

The Literary Society of Gräfelfing has been organizing a regular lecture and performance program since 1921, in the form of a biannual program, beginning in September and January of each calendar year.
Our events, supported by the municipality of Gräfelfing, have been held in Gräfelfing since 1938. Since 1970, we have used the stage of the community center for our readings and lectures, which include theatrical performances as part of our program. During renovations at the community center, we used the stage of the auditorium at the Kurt-Huber-Gymnasium.
Unsere Veranstaltungen finden, stets unterstützt von unserer Gemeinde, seit 1938 in Gräfelfing statt, früher in Krailling - dem Gründungsort der Gesellschaft. Seit 1970 nutzen wir die Bühne des Bürgerhauses für unsere Lesungen und mit szenischen Aufführungen. Umbaubedingt ist es aktuell die Aula des Kurt-Huber-Gymnasiums.

TIPPS AND LINKS
In guter Tradition haben wir für Winter und Frühjahr 2026 wieder ein Programm voller Abwechslung für Sie zusammengestellt. Mit literarischen Leckerbissen ebenso wie mit Abenden, an denen aktuelle gesellschaftliche Fragen im Mittelpunkt stehen.
Wir beginnen mit zwei zeitgeschichtlichen Themen. Götz Aly, der in Gräfelfing aufwuchs, stellt angesichts der Verbrechen des Hitlerregimes die Frage „Wie konnte das geschehen?“ und findet Antworten, die möglicherweise nicht jedem gefallen. Der Zeithistoriker Norbert Frei berichtet dann im Februar, wie der erste Bundeskanzler Konrad Adenauer, dessen 150. Geburtstags wir uns heuer erinnern, dem demokratischen Deutschland zu neuer Gestalt verhilft.
Nach diesem politisch-historischen Saisonauftakt wird es dann literarisch. Der Schauspieler Thomas Birnstiel liest Ödön von Horváths Drama ‚Glaube, Liebe, Hoffnung‘, begleitet an der Gitarre von Peter Maklar. Und Michael Krüger, langjähriger Verleger des Carl Hanser Verlags, erzählt süffig von Begegnungen mit Dichtern und Literaten.
In die unbekannte Welt der Antarktis entführt uns in einem Bildvortrag Volker Strecke, der viereinhalb Jahre als Wissenschaftler in der Gletscherwüste des sechsten Kontinents verbrachte. Ingeborg Gleichauf spricht über Ingeborg Bachmann, die Diva der Dichtkunst der 1950er- und 1960er Jahre, die vor hundert Jahren geboren wurde. Und last, but not least, wollen wir Sie in die Welt der Künstlichen Intelligenz entführen. Wir freuen uns, dass wir dazu Jannis Brühl vonder Süddeutschen Zeitung gewinnen konnten, einen der führenden deutschen Journalisten zum Thema der Digitalisierung.
Für ein solches Programm braucht es viel Arbeit. Die Literarische Gesellschaft braucht Verstärkung, auf mehr als nur einer Ebene: in der Verwaltung der Mitglieder und Finanzen ebenso wie bei Werbung, Veranstaltungsorganisation und Pflege der sozialen Medien. Martin Schulze Wessel (2024) showed us Eastern Europe, whose culture, trauma, and history differ greatly from ours (see also blog post ). Unlike in Western Europe, history there is often a lived part of everyday life.
In the same pulse – Susanne Glass described the state of Israel in change and pain to us in April 2024 – alone, and in November 2025 together with Jenny Havemann. Both cultivate an exemplary partnership: " Two perspectives – one friendship ." Politics as narrative, history as the present.

Archive twenty-five
In 2025, the Literary Society continues its tradition of offering a broad and engaging program. We begin on January 30th with a reading by science journalist Steve Ayan . In his book, "Seelenzauber" (Soul Magic), he vividly and entertainingly describes how, around the turn of the 20th century, psychology and psychotherapy emerged and established themselves as a new science, originating in Vienna.
February is dedicated to Goethe : His "Reynard the Fox" held a mirror up to the political figures of his time and remains relevant this year – shortly before the election to the new Bundestag. On February 11, the actor Thomas Birnstiel will perform the epic poem, accompanied on the cello by Heinrich Klug . And on February 27, the Swiss writer Charles Lewinsky will read from his whimsical Goethe novel "Smoke and Sound" – a literary romp about the Weimar poet laureate's writer's block.
The work of the brilliant yet controversial writer Klaus Mann reflects the tragic turmoil of the first half of the 20th century. His biographer, Thomas Medicus, will speak about his short life on March 12th. But we also want to keep current societal issues in mind: On March 26th, the renowned journalist Franziska Augstein will come to Gräfelfing to analyze the current state of the press and media landscape.
On April 9th, the well-known author Gerd Holzheimer from the Würmtal region will report on his research into the Haushofer family, whose members played a significant role in Bavarian culture, science, and politics for generations. On May 7th, he will take us
Professor Wolfgang Eisenmenger humorously takes us into a world that is closed to most people: the world of forensic medicine. And finally, on May 22nd, Bartholomäus Grill , correspondent for Zeit, Spiegel & Co. for decades, takes us to South Africa, reports on his experiences, and outlines future prospects for this country.

For over 90 years, “Die Literarische” has been an integral part of the cultural life of the Würmtal communities in Munich's southwest. It was founded in 1921 as the “Planegg – Krailling – Gräfelfing Literary Society”. The initiative comes from the high school director Dr. Adolf Stamm from. Having our own cultural offerings in the Würmtal saves you the long journey to events in Munich.
Im Gründungsjahr können bereits 62 Mitglieder gewonnen werden – vorwiegend aus Gräfelfing. Bald benennt man die Gesellschaft dementsprechend um in „Literarische Gesellschaft Gräfelfing“. In den ersten Jahren halten die eigenen Mitglieder Vorträge zu Themen aus Literatur, Kunst und Musik. Bald aber beginnt man, externe Referenten zu gewinnen, und immer öfter kommen prominente Autoren ins Gräfelfinger Weiße Rößl, ins Waldheim oder Café Walz. In den zwanziger und dreißiger Jahren lesen zum Beispiel Waldemar Bonsels, Korfiz Holm, Otto von Taube oder Werner Bergengruen aus ihren Werken.
Between 1933 and 1944 Theodor Engelmann headed the Literary Society. He has traveled worldwide and had many international contacts. He managed to bridge the Nazi era without making any major concessions. According to him, in over 200 events, with two or three inevitable exceptions, no topic of a National Socialist nature was discussed. Even Professor Kurt Huber was able to speak there in the 1942/43 season. He also belongs privately to Chairman Engelmann's circle of friends, as does the Korean poet Mirok Li, who fled from Japanese-occupied Korea to Bavaria in 1919.
In 1946 the events could be resumed under Walter Goetz. After Goetz, the pediatrician Dr. Frank Höfer and from 1958 the publisher Werner Lehmann took over the management of the company. Important writers such as Fedor Stepun, Eugen Roth, Ernst Heimeran, Carl Orff, Ernst Penzoldt, Paul Eipper, Leonhard Frank, Erich Kästner, Joachim Kaiser and Ilse Aichinger are guests in Gräfelfing.
In 1973, the bookseller Wolfgang Pollner took over as chairman, using his contacts in the literary scene. Many greats of the literary world from Elias Canetti, Herbert Rosendorfer, Sarah Kirsch, Marieluise Fleißer, Monika Maron, Hermann Lenz to Sten Nadolny and Herta Müller come to Gräfelfing. In 1980, Pollner founded the Art Circle of the Literary Society with Sinda Dimroth, which became its own association in 1995.

After 36 years, Dr. Klaus Stadler, non-fiction editor at Piper Verlag until his retirement, left Pollner as chairman in 2009. The five-member board works on a voluntary basis and organizes up to 14 evenings per year, including literary and musical events. The society currently has around 420 members. It has been supported by the community with a subsidy for many years and uses the Gräfelfing community center as an event location. Hildegard Hamm-Brücher, Wolfgang Frühwald, Hans Maier, Harald Lesch, Martin Walser and Joachim Gauck will read and speak on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the “Literarische” (2011). Guests in 2015 include Lena Gorelik, Dieter Dorn and Michael Krüger. The following December, Sybil Countess Schönfeldt will present important autumn books for the seventh year in a row.
